“Water agreed to appear as a small fountain on the surface of the Earth. From this fountain Water spread to the North, South, East, and West,” wrote Bill Martin in Lost Legends (Pomegranate, 1995). Throughout a lifetime of living and painting in the San Francisco Bay Area, Martin (American, 1943–2008) became central to the visionary art movement with his works exploring the natural world.
Martin received his BFA and MFA degrees from the San Francisco Art Institute, where he later taught. His paintings have been exhibited in galleries and museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris.
