Daniel Merriam (American, b. 1963) Bubble Street, 1994
1994 Daniel Merriam’s surreal artworks combine a romantic Victorian sensibility with a dreamlike imagination. Bubble Street is one of his fantasy-fueled paintings, in which riotous colour presents a neighborhood street filled with bubbles, odd creatures, an old-timey car, architecturally magnificent homes and children enjoying a swing and a bike ride. There’s much, much more in this visual feast, reproduced for this 1,000-piece puzzle by renowned fine art puzzle brand Pomegranate.
Merriam grew up in a small village along the coast of Maine and taught himself to paint. Surreal. romantic and phantasmagorical, he built his skills and portfolio with fantasy-fueled drawings and paintings. His artwork features ornately decorated Baroque buildings that are suspended in trees, crafted over waterfalls, and carried on the backs of elephants and cats. Likewise, the characters who populate Merriam’s wonderland dress extravagantly as they travel in hot air balloons and ride carriages and penny-farthing bicycles.
In 2012, he opened Bubble Street Gallery - an emporium celebrating creativity and the imagination in Sausalito, California - where he and other steampunk-infused artists showcase their work. The gallery was named after his painting Bubble Street. Merriam’s artwork hasn’t been confined to this gallery, however. His paintings have traveled in exhibitions across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. As Merriam says, his audience is universal, limited only to “those who have the willingness to see with their hearts and minds.”
